This is an advanced course in English for specific purposes.
We will focus on:
- academic vocabulary and vocabulary related to computer science (derivation, collocations);
- discussion skills (participating in discussions and debates, giving and asking for opinions, etc.);
- presentation skills (structuring your presentation, using signposting phrases);
- reading skills (academic prose: finding information, summarising, giving opinions);
- academic writing (citing sources, using reporting verbs, structuring your writing, using linking words, summarising, writing abstracts);
- most common grammatical errors (tenses, the passive, conditionals, relative clauses, modal verbs, reported speech).
- Studying computer science
- Computer essentials, computer architecture
- Computer advertisements and reviews
- Software (software development, software solutions)
- Networks, the Internet, websites
- AI
- Information security, cybercrime
- Careers in ICT (CVs, application letters, job interviews)
- Recent developments and emerging technologies
- English CS Textbook
- Interactive exercises (e-classroom)
COURSE OBLIGATIONS
Attendance and active participation
- Students who attend class sessions regularly, actively participate in class discussions and complete the interactive exercises are exempt from taking the oral exam.
- If you miss more than 5 class sessions, you will need to take the oral exam.
- Give a freely-spoken presentation on a topic from the field of computer science and equip it with a few slides.
- Prepare a collaborative activity for your fellow students.
- Submit an analytical report on your seminar assignment.
- In case of late submission, please contact the teacher.
- You will be awarded points for the seminar assignment. A positive grade in the seminar is a prerequisite for taking the final exam.
- Prepare to discuss the topics covered in class;
- Prior to the exam, submit 5 summaries of articles/reports you have read/watched/listened to; you will discuss them during the oral exam.
