Final Assignment – Step 2: Begin filling in the application template
Final Assignment – Step 2: Begin filling in the application template
Due: 31 Jan @ 23:59
This is the last step you’ll take – for now – on the post-doc application. The goal is to fill in a few sections with more detail (see below) and transfer the information you already have in your concept note to the template (Supplied).
I have created an annotated template which you can use. It is the standard ARRS template, but with my notes in red text. I also highlighted the section headings I want you to focus on.
The template has 5 sections. Instructions for each follow:
27.1 – Transfer from your concept note. Refine objectives as needed.
27.2 – Transfer from your concept note. If you wish to add to this section, you may.
27.3 – This is one of two areas to focus on for this assignment. Take the work plan elements you have created so far and expand them. Make sure you have Work Package names, their duration (see hint below), overall work package objectives, and tasks that will be carried out. Be sure to include 1 Work Package on project management, 1 Work Package on Communication and Dissemination, and the rest on your scientific work (a Work Package on Impact Assessment is optional).
27.4 – You may ignore this for now. However, if you want to carry out the exercise, you may list the equipment necessary to carry out your experiment(s).
27.5 – In this section, define any management bodies that may be involved (internal at your host organisation? External advisory? Who sits on them, and what do they do?) Provide a Gantt chart with the timeline of your project, broken down by task. Provide a Pert Diagram of how your Work Packages link together to make a coherent project.
Hints:
- If you are stuck on a section, try placing the outline of the information that you think should be there. Return to it later.
- Work Programme: Work Package names should give the reviewer a good idea of what work will be carried out. Objectives that you list in each work package should have some connection to the objectives listed in Section 27.1. Work Package durations are typically measured in Months. If a Work Package will take 6 months to carry out and it starts in the second month you can either list the start and end dates (e.g., Start: M2, End M7) or just a start date and duration (Start: M2, Duration: 6 Months). Remember, you are the only one working on this project and the total duration is 24 months. Don’t promise more than 24 months of work.
- Tasks within Work Packages: Each Work Package should have a description of work broken down into tasks. I would suggest no more than 5 tasks per work package, maybe fewer. If you will use validated or standard questionnaires, list them; if you will apply a standard method of testing, state what it is; If you will recruit human subjects discuss ethics, sampling, demographics, etc.; if you will do a clinical trial, define it and state where you will register it, etc.
- If you are having a hard time determining the appropriate project scale, start small and can scale up as needed when you see you have some time left in your work programme.
- If you don’t yet have the details needed to describe the work plan in detail, add the steps you think need to be taken and make your best guess at how long each will take.
- You don’t need to completely fill in the document at this point.
